Facebook Introduces Free Verified Checkmark Through Selfie Video Verification

Facebook Introduces Free Verified Checkmark Through Selfie Video Verification

Facebook has announced a new free verification feature that allows eligible users to receive a verified badge by submitting a short selfie video. The initiative is designed to help users identify genuine accounts and reduce the spread of fake or AI-generated profiles.

According to Facebook, users simply need to record a short selfie video. The platform will compare the video with the profile photos to confirm that the account belongs to a real person. The verification process is completely free and usually takes only a few minutes.

How It Works
  • Record and submit a short selfie video.
  • Facebook compares the video with profile photos.
  • If the identity is confirmed and the account meets Facebook's Trust and Safety standards, a verified badge is issued.
Who Can Apply?

The feature is currently available only for:

  • Personal Facebook accounts.
  • Users aged 18 years or older.
  • Accounts with a good history and no involvement in fraud, scams, or misleading activities.

At present, the feature is not available for Facebook Pages or profiles using Professional Mode.

Where the Badge Will Appear

Once approved, the verified badge will appear in several places across Facebook, including:

  • User profiles
  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Facebook Dating
  • Facebook Groups

Facebook also plans to expand the badge to posts displayed in users' Facebook Feeds in the future.

What the Badge Means

Facebook clarified that the badge only confirms that the account belongs to a real person who has successfully completed the selfie verification process. It does not mean Facebook endorses or guarantees the user's behavior.

Verified users must continue following Facebook's Community Standards and other platform policies. Accounts that violate these rules may still face enforcement actions.

Availability

The feature is being rolled out gradually in selected countries before expanding globally.

Key Highlights
  • Free identity verification—no subscription required.
  • Short selfie video required.
  • Available only for eligible personal accounts.
  • Designed to reduce fake and AI-generated accounts.
  • Rolling out gradually worldwide.

Note: The availability of this feature may vary by country as Facebook continues its phased global rollout.
